"We are born at a given moment in a given place and like vintage years of wine we have the qualities of the year and of the season in which we are born" - C. G. Jung.
Astrology, in all its many forms, has existed for as long as human civilization has and there is a reason for this. The great C. G. Jung was known to consult the astrological charts of the patients he worked with and spoke of how much crucial, detailed information they gave him.
The movements of the planets in space, against the backdrop of the firmament, have been observed by astrologers from time immemorial to correlate closely and consistently with particular 'types', or recognisably archetypal themes, of events and situations in the lives of individuals as well as the wider world.
Astrology can offer deep and profound insight into our character/personality, habitual inclinations/behavioural patterns as well as our internal psycho-geography. It can help us to understand how and why they are formed and structured in the way they are.
It can give us a profound understanding of ourselves and our lives that simply isn't possible in any other system of healing or self-understanding.
By understanding what archetypal myths and energies are symbolised by the different planets and what roles these planets are playing in our birth chart, we can get a clearer sense of what our potential is, and how we can work to fulfill it in a way that honours the promise, the challenges and the uniqueness of our 'cosmic birth certificate'.
Traditional Western astrology is more centrally focused on the Sun as representing the core of the human identity. Its 'Tropical' zodiac is based on the relationship between the sun and the earths seasons, making it a 'solar' and seasonally based astrology.
It uses a complex and multi-layered approach to planetary transits and progressions and due to its cultural context is generally more compatible with the use of modern western psychological ideas and concepts.
Vedic astrology, or 'Jyotish' - meaning 'the light', places the moon and her symbolism, as well as the relationship between the earth and the deep cosmos, in a more central role through its use of the 'Sidereal' zodiac and could be described as more of a 'lunar' and 'cosmic' astrology.
Vedic astrology is more predictive in nature than Western astrology, as it is embedded within an ancient spiritual system of understanding which takes karma, past lives and 'cyclic existence' as a given.
The Vedic understanding of time as being a living, changing, deified force, and the 'mythic' narratives which give life to the lunar mansions, carry the wisdom of over five thousand years of astronomical, spiritual and cultural development.
The Vedic system of 'mahadashas', or planetary periods, is an incredibly powerful predictive tool, which can give us a transformative understanding of what planetary cycles and seasons we will pass through in our lives, how they are likely to affect us and how we can best navigate them.
My own experience with several experienced and skilled astrologers, as well as my study of my own birth chart and the charts of people around me, has shown me over and over again that the cosmos is a single, unified reality. Listening to the messages that reality gives us can be truly life-changing.
I offer astrological analysis within the Vedic tradition, as this system is what resonates with me most deeply. I do also include an awareness of the outer planets and a more western-style approach to planetary transits at times, if I feel that is applicable.

"The stars are like letters which inscribe themselves at every moment in the sky . . . . Everything in the world is full of signs. . . . All events are coordinated. . . . All things depend on each other; as has been said, ‘Everything breathes together.’”
